The "TECLA"
Robert GruppeI met Robert Gruppe during Sail Gloucester 2009 at the Gorton's Wharf. We were both Taking photos of the Tall Ships. I'm a big Fan of his Work. I've never met Robert before, He's a very friendly Guy. He was waiting for the Moon to rise over the State fish Pier before he started painting. He uses an old "Gloucester Easel". He had his easel up and he was painting within 3 minutes. The first photo is of the "TECLA" tied up at the State Fish Pier.
This was the Scene he started painting.
He has a beautiful Gallery on Rocky Neck you can visit.

I used to draw in his studio back in late 70's, him, al czerpak, ed touchette. we had a great model, one of the banarettes.
I went out to paint with robert once. He banged on my door 1/2 hour after sun-up. If I wasn't immediately out the door, i couldn't go. His lesson to me: it's warm, it's cool. use cobalt blue. zinc white, titanium doesn't dry.
best,
deb.
Banarettes?
How was it painting with him?
Is he as demanding as his Father was?
My Father told me how he hated kicking his Father Emile and his students off the wharfs so they could dry their nets, Captains orders he would tell him. Emile just laughed and said "Ahh, your the fisherman who wants to be an Artist and I'm the Artist who wants to be a fisherman". He was always good to my Father when he was out painting. Unfortunately he no longer can paint due to his Macular degeneration disease.
Robert let me tag along because I was afraid to paint down the docks without company. The only advice he gave me is re-iterated: it is warm, it is cool. use cobalt blue, zinc white, titanium doesn't dry.
and for drawing: he studied with demetrios. my teachers studied with demetrios at the time robert studied with demetrios. if there is such a thing as 'the demetrios way of drawing', i was trained in it. anyway, robert said drawing is drawing, painting is painting. they are different and apart. and we differ in that my journey has been to learn to draw with paint. come to think of it, i can draw with just about anything.
